Nineteen years ago, Donald Williams averaged 21.8 points per game and scored 109 points in the last five games of the 1993 NCAA Tournament for North Carolina.

That earned him the Most Outstanding Player hardware and a national championship ring.

“I’ve won three championship rings overseas since then, Williams said. But it wasn’t the same. It wasn’t at home. I’ve always wanted to win another one at home.”

He’ll get his shot at Northwood (Pittsboro, N.C.), this time as a coach.

Williams was named Chargers boys’ basketball coach Tuesday.

“I’m very, very excited, Williams said. I’m looking forward to it. I’m just ready to get things going. I wish the season was starting today.”

Last season, Williams pulled double duty, serving as assistant girls’ basketball coach at St. Mary’s (Raleigh, N.C.) and assistant boys’ basketball coach at Garner (Garner, N.C.), his alma mater.

Northwood athletic director Jason Amy said that hiring Williams was a no-brainer.
