Basketball Play of the Week

Power Vs. Man

Every team should have a few great "need" plays for those situations when you need a big basket. In this play, called "Power," 5 is your best low-post scorer and 2 is your best overall scorer.

1 makes a dribble entry on the left side, then changes direction to come off a screen set by 4 on top. 1 dribbles to the center of the court near the top of the key. 2 sets a cross-screen for 5 in the lane, who rolls across the lane looking for an entry pass from 1. 3 reads the defense adn either slides out top or cuts toward the baseline on the right side.

After setting the cross-screen, 2 pauses for a moment under the rim and rolls hard off a downscreen set by 4. 2 curls to the left-side elbow. 3 continues to read the defense and slides either up or down depending on the defensive help.

1 passes to 5 in the low post or 2 at the left elbow. After setting the downscreen for 2, 4 sets up in good position for any rebound.

Jim Calhoun, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn.

This looks pretty good. I can see #1 also taking the ball all the way to the basket as well, if the opportunity was there. Good play, coach. Of course I am bias, being a UConn alum an all.
