Mike Bartee was getting bored with total retirement.

“Sitting at home watching ‘Jeopardy’ and ‘The Price Is Right’ wasn’t very fun, Bartee said with a laugh. The opportunity presented itself to return (to coaching), and so I took it.”

Bartee returned to lead the Riverside North boys basketball program two seasons ago, and he has continued to add to his legacy.

Wednesday night. Bartee notched the 600th victory of his career, as the Huskies rolled past Riverside Arlington, 70-24, to secure a share of the Inland Valley League championship.

Bartee has earned 581 of those victories over 28 seasons at North. The first 19 wins came at Perris.

But 600 was not the number Bartee was most proud of on this evening. He wanted to talk more about the program’s 17th league title won under his guidance.

“That’s what it’s all about, right in there, Bartee said, pointing to his players in the team room. Those titles mean a lot because those (championship banners) go up there forever.”
