An assistant basketball coach for the Amherst Regional High School (Mass.) boys varsity team who was at the center of allegations that he directed one of his players to assault a coach of the South Hadley team during a game has been removed from his duties, according to a statement issued Thursday by Amherst-Pelham Regional School Superintendent Maria Geryk.

The statement states assistant coach Eric Wheeler has been dismissed.

“”Mr. Wheeler is no longer coaching Amherst students, effective immediately, the statement reads.

Wheeler came under fire amid allegations that he directed guard Tyrell Jackson to run into opposing coach Jeff Guiel during a Monday night game as payback for Guiel wandering onto the court during the game. Jackson was suspended following the incident, but in the aftermath, Jackson and five other teammates told a reporter with The Republican and MassLive.com that Jackson was directed to run into Guiel by Wheeler.

The statement by the Amherst school superintendent’s office notes that during an investigation by Amherst school officials it was learned that Amherst Assistant Coach Eric Wheeler suggested such an action to the student involved.”

The statement notes that Wheeler was frustrated with the referees for failing to penalize Guiel for walking onto the court and believe if an Amherst player ran into him, a technical foul would be assessed. “Coach Wheeler then shared his belief with a player who then acted upon it.”
