Coach Fired For Using Locker Room Profanity

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.–Coach Shawn Shreffler led the Chambersburg High School boy’s basketball team to a district title last month, but Wednesday night the school board voted to fire him.

After a lengthy and emotional meeting, the board voted 5-4 to remove Shreffler from the position.

The school board retreated behind closed doors to talk about the coach and the job in executive session, but there were reports the move was the result of a player’s complaint that Shreffler used foul language in the locker room.

Close to two dozen people spoke at length on behalf of Shreffler, including many of his current and former players.

“Maybe the school district doesn’t want to be successful, said Chambersburg junior Kellen Williams, the team’s leading scorer this year. Maybe they want to have losing records. I personally don’t, so I think Coach Shreffler should still have his job.”

“Shawn Shreffler has directed our young men over this time period and become a role model for all to follow, said one of many district residents to stick up for the coach. What troubles me is that we are here tonight based on a few bad apples.”

Shreffler was moved by the support.

“I’m very appreciative of all the people who found time to come out tonight and speak on my behalf, he said.

Two people spoke out against Shreffler and said he used “mind games” against players, including one former student who said he was cut by Shreffler.

The other to speak against the coach was the mother of a former player.

“It’s humiliating them, calling them out in front of players, putting them down, she said.
