Costas Weighs in on ‘Redskins’ as Nicknames Debate Heats Up

Bob Costas offered his take on Native American nicknames, namely the NFL’s Washington Redskins, on Oct. 12 during halftime of Sunday Night Football.

The debate over Indian nicknames has heated up over the last month. President Barack Obama said if he were owner he would think about changing the name, and now the National Congress of American Indians released a 29-page report stating its case for why all schools and organizations should discontinue using the names.

The January edition of Winning Hoops‘ sister publication, Coach and Athletic Director, will include the results of a reader poll about the controversy. Here is video of Costas’ commentary during the Oct. 12 Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins game.
