EL PASO, Texas —

A local high school basketball coach labeled as the winningest active coach in Texas and fourth in the nation is approaching 900 wins, according to the Texas Association of Basketball coaches.

Tony Harper is the varsity boys’ basketball coach for Montwood High School. The Montwood Rams will face the Coronado Thunderbirds at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, and a win could grant Harper his 900th win of his career.

Harper has been a head coach for 42 years, and he won his 800th game in 2009.

Charlie Boggess of San Antonio follows Harper with 864 wins. Robert Capello of Edcouch, Texas has 982 wins overall, but he is no longer active.

Nationally, Harper trails behind Joel Hawkins of Southern Lab, La., with 1089 wins; Ronald Bradley of Covington, Ga., with 1011 wins; and Bob Hurley of Jersey City, N. J. with 957 wins.
