Sonny Smith isn’t blaming Tony Barbee for what’s wrong with Auburn basketball.

“I don’t think it’s got anything to do with the coaching, Smith said.

The former Auburn coach is blaming college basketball in general and the NCAA’s academic standards, specifically, for why programs like Auburn are struggling.

“You got to get players that can get in, players that can stay in and players that can graduate, said Smith, who had a 173-154 career record in 11 seasons (1979-89) at Auburn. And sometimes, you have to take a lesser basketball player to get it done.”

Under Barbee, the Tigers lost their last 10 games this season to finish 9-23. Barbee has won only 35 games in his three years at Auburn.

After losing 71-62 to Texas A&M in Wednesday’s first round of the SEC tournament, Barbee took sole responsibility for how this season unfolded.
