A former St. Norbert College basketball player has lost his bid to punish his coaches for treatment that he says was too tough and eventually drove him out of school.

The District III Court of Appeals upheld Brown County Circuit Judge William Atkinson’s dismissal of a lawsuit that Tyler Wyand-Williams, 23, of Combined Locks, filed against St. Norbert, head basketball coach Gary Grzesk and assistant coaches Kyle Brown and Woodrow Wilson.

Wyand-Williams, who played basketball for Appleton Xavier in high school, sought unspecified punitive damages and damages for emotional distress and lost earning capacity after quitting the team in 2009 when he was a sophomore. He claimed the three coaches “directly and indirectly pressured, intimidated, humiliated, and otherwise caused (him) to terminate his position as a member of … the team, according to court records.

After quitting, Wyand-Williams returned to campus for second semester in January but claimed he was depressed and suicidal and kept to his dorm room out of fear of running into the coaches and shame of seeing former teammates, according to court records. He dropped out of school that spring because of what he claimed was emotional stress caused by the coaches, court records say.

He filed suit in June 2011.
