High School Star Loses POY Award After Obscene Tweet

A New Hampshire high school basketball player was stripped of his player of the year award after sending out a vulgar message through social media.

Patrick Welch of Pembroke Academy was named the Division II player of the year, but after his team beat Portsmouth for the championship, he sent out an obscene tweet directed at the opposing team.

It was taken down in minutes, but members of the New Hampshire Basketball Coaches Organization got wind of the tweet and called it “flagrant unsportsmanlike behavior” and took his title away.

Welch wasn’t allowed to represent his school at the Senior Games on Sunday, and the same goes for the Twin State Games this summer.

Some said the punishment was too severe, but members of the coaches organization said they have to uphold their principles. In a statement, coaches said they were saddened about taking the action, but they said the player of the year award is about more than just the player’s ability. It’s also about character and sportsmanship.
