Indiana approves ‘past-link’ rule on transfers

The Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors on Monday unanimously approved a new rule aimed at student-athlete transfers.

The “past-link” proposal, which originated with the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, was designed to prevent athletes from following their non-school coaches to another program. Any athlete that transfers to a school with a coach, manager or trainer on staff that worked with them during the summer or with a club team will be ineligible for 365 days, according to The Indianapolis Star.

Michigan and Colorado have similar rules to curb the number of athlete transfers. Proponents hope the measure will help prevent illegal recruiting tactics by coaches.

The proposal received more than 90 percent favorability in a straw poll among administrators during April’s principals meetings that took place throughout the state, according to the IHSAA.
