University of Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich received permission to negotiate a five-year contract extension for men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino, essentially ensuring that he retires a Cardinal.

The U of L Athletic Association personnel committee’s vote on Monday authorized Jurich to craft an extension that will run through June 30, 2022. Pitino’s current deal runs through 2017.

“He’s a young guy, I’ve said it many times, he may be 60 but he’s going on 35 — maybe even younger than that, Jurich said. He’s got an incredible amount of energy, and he’s worked extremely hard. We just love the direction this program is going and I’d really like to see him continue on as long as he possibly can.”

Jurich publicaly mentioned the extension last week as the two sat side-by-side at a press conference. Jurich will complete the terms and present it to the full U of L Athletic Association, which will convene on Tuesday.

Pitino completed his 27th season as a college basketball head coach with the U of L’s ninth trip to the Final Four last April. Pitino begins his 11th season at U of L, his longest tenure of any of his coaching stops, with a team ranked No. 2 in both major polls.
