Michigan State-North Carolina To Be Played On Aircraft Carrier?

It’s been seven years since Michigan State first discussed publicly the idea of playing a basketball game on a docked aircraft carrier.

It may not be much longer before that game is confirmed.

“An announcement is forthcoming, MSU athletic director Mark Hollis said in a text message this morning, adding that’s all he can say at this point.

But the numbers 11-11-11 – which are painted on the Breslin Center court in red, white and blue – are telling in their own right. Hollis confirmed earlier this year that he would like to stage the game that day — Nov. 11, 2011, which is Veterans Day.

MSU’s plan has been to play North Carolina in one game, with two service academies playing to make it a doubleheader. Jacksonville, Fla., has been mentioned in the past as a potential site.

North Carolina senior associate athletic director Larry Gallo told the Chapel Hill News & Observer the schools are still talking about the game, and it could very well happen.

MSU coach Tom Izzo talked about the game at a Nov. 1 speaking engagement in Detroit, but told reporters later that day that nothing has been solidified.

“We are still trying, Izzo said then. I have no idea (how close); that’s kind of (Hollis’) banana he’s working on, but it is something that I think he wants to do, and I want to do. It’s just trying to put the logistics together and he’s working on that.”
