Philadelphia U’s Shirley Wins No. 600

On his fourth attempt, Philadelphia University women’s basketball coach Tom Shirley reached his 600th career victory Wednesday night when the Rams beat Chestnut Hill, 76-60, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference home game at the Gallagher Athletic Center.

Christine Wooding scored 20 points while Taylor Magnus added 15 for the Rams (8-6, 4-3 CACC).

Shirley’s team, which did not pull away from the Griffins (3-11, 1-6) until the closing minutes, had dropped two conference games, at Felician College and Holy Family, and also fell at home Sunday to District of Columbia in a nonconference game.

The 56-year-old Shirley, in his 30th season, became the 20th coach to reach the milestone among all three NCAA divisions. His record is 600-275.

“The kids were a little nervous, but they played through it, Shirley said of the recent attempts to gain him the milestone. It feels really great. It’s really cool.”

Shirley, also the Rams’ athletic director, began coaching the women at his alma mater, Division III Allentown College, at the start of the 1981-82 season. He went 149-73 in eight seasons. He joined the Rams in 1989.
