University of Pikeville basketball coach Kelly Wells was released from Jewish Hospital Thursday and plans to return to the bench for Saturday’s home game.

Wells, a 2004 kidney-transplant recipient, said biopsy test results showed no signs of rejection. There is chronic scarring on the kidney, and he will have to monitor his blood pressure.

Wells has been in at Jewish Hospital since last Thursday’s 93-57 exhibition loss to the University of Louisville at the KFC Yum! Center.

“There are some hurdles ahead, but we’re very pleased, the 41-year-old said. I’m started to feel a little bit better. My guys pulled out a huge win yesterday. That helped out a lot as well.”

No. 9 Pikeville improved to 5-0 on Wednesday with a 102-100 overtime victory at Life University on a three-pointer at the buzzer. The Bears will next play at home against Alice Lloyd on Saturday afternoon.
