Pitino Nixes TV Show

NEW YORK — Dim the lights. Kill the camera. Rick Pitino says no television show for him on WHAS this basketball season.

The University of Louisville men’s coach said the reason the show won’t go on is that the format had become like his team’s man-to-man defense: overdue for an overhaul. Coaches’ shows have not evolved since Dr. James Naismith entered the gym.

Maybe Pitino is looking for a fresh format, or maybe he is annoyed by the PR hits he and his program have taken since that jarring NCAA Tournament loss to Michigan State in March 2009. You know the list.

But if “Courtside with Rick Pitino” did return, there’s never been more material for a producer to work with.

SHOW ONE: Can Pitino shake a contender from the group that his Big East coaching peers picked to tie for eighth at the conference’s media day Wednesday at Madison Square Garden?

Eighth is behind Notre Dame — and the Cardinals have never finished behind the Fighting Irish since U of L entered the league in 2005.

It’s also behind St. John’s — and the Red Storm dumped coach Norm Roberts for Steve Lavin after last season. Crazy? Hey, Pitino picked St. John’s to win the Big East.

And this is a down Big East. Even Pitino admitted the league will start the season with only one certain 2011 NBA first-round draft pick in Georgetown guard Austin Freeman.
