Prep sports participation nationwide increases for 27th straight year

It’s another year of growth for high school sports, as the latest participation survey from the National Federation of State High School Associations shows more kids are playing sports today than ever before.

The NFHS participation survey counted 7, 868, 900 student-athletes during the 2015-16 school year, an increase of 61, 853 from the prior year. This is the 27th consecutive year of growth for high school sports.

Boys basketball participation stands at 546, 428 (up 4, 949 from the 2014-15 school year), while girls basketball sits at 429, 380 (down 124). Basketball is the third most-played sport for girls and boys.

Texas and California have the highest participation numbers of any state, ranking No. 1 and 2 respectively. Florida passed New Jersey to take No. 8 on the list.
