Chip Atkins had been battling brain cancer for the last couple years. One Saturday, Atkins died at the age of 64. When he retired due to health issues in 2007, he was fourth on the all-time South Carolina wins list with 637. He coached at Jackson, Allendale-Fairfax, Barnwell, Williston-Elko and Lower Richland high schools in S.C.
