Survey: How do you choose captains?

* This article was originally published by our sister publication, Coach and Athletic Director

What’s the best method for choosing captains for your athletic programs?

High school and college teams have a variety of methods for choosing their team leaders, so we asked readers in July whether the decisions were left to coaches or players. Here are the results of the survey along with a handful of the responses.

• Players vote, and points tallied. Seniors who graduated vote, and points tallied. Coaches vote, and points tallied. The kids write why they want/deserve to be captain. The decision is a combination of all of those things.

• Kids vote and then vote recipients write an essay answering why they would be a good captain and what they will bring to the team as a captain. Those essays are then ranked and top essays become captains.

• Our players choose but after the season is over. We expect ALL of our players to have leadership roles during the season.

• My teams incorporate players’ choice with coaches’ input. In the past, our rule was that only seniors were eligible for a captains position. After an exceptional junior was overwhelmingly chosen by the players, we included more coaches input.
