Tennessee Cancels Summer Trip To Italy

The Tennessee men’s

basketball team’s overseas trip originally scheduled for this summer has been canceled, according to coach

Cuonzo Martin and UT athletic director

Mike Hamilton.

NCAA teams are allowed an overseas tour once every four years. The Vols had planned a trip to play in Italy this summer.

But that was before the 2011-12 schedule was complete, the team’s NCAA woes and subsequent coaching change.

Hamilton said with UT scheduled to play in the Maui Invitational in Hawaii this November, an overseas trip would have been pushing things from a travel standpoint.

Martin expressed concerns about the overseas trip from the time of his hiring with the Vols for a couple of reasons.

For one, Tennessee would have trouble filling out a roster, particularly if either or both

Scotty Hopson and

Tobias Harris elects to keep their names in the NBA draft.

Secondly, Martin has committed to serving as an assistant to Purdue coach Matt Painter at the World University Games in China from Aug. 12-23 in Shenzhen, China. The training camp to select the 12-member USA team will be July 30-Aug. 8 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“It will be better to wait a year for the trip because then we can get a feel for our players, ” Martin said. “When you take those trips, you’re also building team camaraderie. It’s always a beneficial trip, playing five or six games and getting the extra practice.”

Martin was head coach at Missouri State when he was selected to coach in the World University Games by USA Basketball chairman and Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim.

Martin said both Hopson and Harris would be eligible to try out for the team if they elect to stay with the Vols for another season.

Praise For Martin Hire: CBS basketball analyst Seth Davis, in a column for SI.com, rated Hamilton’s hire of Martin as the “smartest” of the offseason.

“The Tennessee fans who are wailing that Hamilton didn’t land a big name are living in an alternate universe, ” Davis writes. “Martin has a proven track record . . . he is a man of high character . . .

“If Tennessee fans give Martin the support he deserves instead of the derision he doesn’t, he will reward them with a winner.”

McRae: UT radio commentator Bert Bertelkamp might be using his signature call for more baskets from freshman Jordan McRae this upcoming season.

McRae was among the more impressive players during spring workouts and appears to have grown an inch up to 6-foot-6.

“I’ve got a plan to do some things that some people might not expect from me, ” said McRae, who struggled to find playing time behind junior Cameron Tatum and outgoing senior Josh Bone this past season. “It doesn’t matter to me if I play the two or the three.”

Martin said he likes what he sees from McRae.

“I think Jordan has the potential and the skill package to be a guy that can score the basketball, ” Martin said.
