Tennessee Hires Missouri State’s Cuonzo Martin

The University of Tennessee announced Sunday that the school has hired Missouri State’s Cuonzo Martin as the team’s new basketball coach.

Martin led Missouri State to its first Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title this year in just his third season on the job.

He replaces Bruce Pearl, who was fired by the school last week amid a storm of NCAA rules violations. Pearl had led the Volunteers to the NCAA tournament in all six of his seasons in Knoxville.

The school has scheduled a news conference Monday to introduce Martin as the Vols’ new coach.

“Cuonzo is among the most promising young coaches in the game, and we are excited about the coaching ability, toughness, and energy that he brings to our program, Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton said in a statement. “He has a proven track record of success as a head coach at Missouri State and an assistant at Purdue as well as an outstanding career as a college basketball player. His Missouri State program improved from 11 wins to 26 in just two seasons, and they won the regular season conference championship this year.”

Martin, who was 61-48 overall in his three seasons at Missouri State, played college basketball at Purdue and was later an assistant coach with the Boilermakers under both Gene Keady and Matt Painter. During his playing days, Purdue reached the Elite Eight in 1994.

“Cuonzo has an inspiring personal story, and we look forward to his impact on Tennessee basketball, Hamilton said. We welcome Cuonzo, his wife Roberta, their sons Joshua and Chase, and their daughter, Addison, to the Tennessee family.”

Martin, 39, was named the Missouri Valley’s coach of the year and was a finalist for two national coach of the year awards.
