A Wisconsin girls’ basketball coach who was accused of punching a player in the face after a loss was actually trying to break up a fight and won’t be charged, prosecutors said.

Travel-team coach Fred E. Freeman was arrested at a tournament near Indianapolis on Monday after a 17-year-old girl on his team claimed he cussed at her, punched her in the face, threw her on the ground and choked her.

The 47-year-old was facing misdemeanor battery charges, but prosecutors decided to throw out the charges Tuesday, saying witnesses told them Freeman was breaking up a scuffle.

Freeman told a Milwaukee television station WITI-TV that the girl tried to attack his daughter, who also plays on the team, the Wisconsin Steelerz.

The girl was a troublemaker, Freeman said, and he had booted her off the team before for lashing out.

“She just started walking on the court, throwing a tantrum, cussing, Freeman told the station. The kid totally loses her composure. I kicked this kid off my team four or five weeks ago for the exact same kind of issues.”

Freeman said he sent the girl home, and that’s when she attacked his daughter.

He was trying to pull her off when both he and the girl fell on the ground, Freeman said.
