Wisconsin Fires Women’s Coach Stone

MADISON, Wis. — University of Wisconsin women’s basketball coach Lisa Stone is out of a job after her team again failed to make into the NCAA tournament.UW athletic director Barry Alvarez made the announcement relieving Stone of her duties on Monday afternoon. She had coached the team for eight seasons.

“She is a good person and has been a loyal and enthusiastic representative of our athletic department and university, Alvarez was quoted as saying in a statement.He said that despite Stone’s contributions, our women’s basketball program has not reached and maintained the level of success I believe is possible.

“Stone released a statement that thanked Alvarez, school officials, her staff and the players for their support.”This program has meant the world to me and I have put my heart and soul into it. It has been an honor to be the head coach for the Wisconsin Badgers, she was quoted as saying.Alvarez said that they would immediately begin a search for a new coach.

Stone led the Badgers to a 128-119 (.518) record and one NCAA tournament appearance last year during her tenure. Despite high expectations for this season, her team finished 16-15 this season. The Badgers lost to Illinois State in the second round of the WNIT on Sunday.

Last spring, Stone was given a three-year contract extension through the 2014-2015 season.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
