Wisconsin Names Stanford Assistant Kelsey New Head Coach

MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team has a new coach.

Bobbie Kelsey was introduced as the Badgers’ new head coach Monday afternoon at the Kohl Center.Kelsey was a player at Stanford in the mid-1990s, and she was an assistant coach there for the last four years.

Kelsey, 38, has been to the national championship game as a player and a coach.

“All I know is success — that’s all I know. That doesn’t mean I’ve won every game, but I know what it takes to get a program to get their players to give 100 percent, Kelsey said. They share with me their eagerness and excitement about a new start, a new change and a new opportunity to get this program back to where it should be, where it can be, and where it will be — if I have anything to say about it, which I do today.”

Kelsey will have to hit the ground running at Wisconsin starting next year. With Alyssa Karel, Tara Steinbauer and Lin Zastrow all graduated, the rest of the returning players will have to step up and help the new coach get adjusted. The players said they’re excited to get to work.

“It’s a change, and just from listening to her, I can hear her passion and desire for hard work and that she’s going to give us 100 percent, and that’s exciting, said Taylor Wurtz, a sophomore guard for the Badgers.

She has been there. She’s been there as a player. She’s coached the last four years when they’ve gone to the (national) tournament and everything like that. I think for her to be here, and helping us and showing us what it takes to get there, is definitely very important, said Cassie Rochel, Badgers freshman forward. Many people thought the new Wisconsin women’s basketball coach would be Green Bay’s Matt Bollant, but he’ll be staying in Green Bay.
